From understanding what makes a great website builder to reviews of top options, we’ll provide the insights and tools needed to make an informed decision and quickly build a stunning website.

Website Builders Explained

When you’re looking at website builders, there are a few things you’ll want to keep in mind.

Typically, a website builder is considered a platform or software that helps you build a website without code. With all of the resources out there today, a good website builder will usually be fairly intuitive and feature a drag-and-drop interface for updating the design of your website.

To simplify this article, I want to break it down more. The platform is the back-end nuts and bolts of the site. The platform would be whichever website service or content management system you choose. In this article, I’ll focus on the two platforms I would recommend, which are Shopify and WordPress.
Once you choose your platform, you will select a theme.

In Shopify, the theme and Shopify dashboard make up your website builder.
In WordPress, the “website builder” is made up of three components: The admin + theme + a theme builder.

For example, let’s say that I just signed up for a Shopify plan. The next thing I do to start building the website is choose and install a theme. The themes in Shopify have different page elements, features, and options that will help me design and build that site. Those are the components of the website builder.

The process in WordPress is similar. Once I set up a WordPress website on my hosting plan, I select and install a theme to help design and create the website.

Tip: Some WordPress themes have better builders behind them.

Some WordPress themes use the basic page builder or random “builders,” which usually cause more trouble than they’re worth. Keep reading to find out which WordPress builders we recommend.

Best WordPress Website Builders

I recommend two builders in WordPress to anyone. I’ll explain why and give a few reasons why you might choose one over the other.

Divi Theme (Comes With The Divi Builder)

The Divi Theme is all the things. It’s a builder, allows anyone to be the designer, is easy to work with, and has many resources out there to help people use it. Divi has been around for years, and I’ve used this theme to design and build countless websites.

Divi is highly customizable. If you have a design in mind, you can use it to bring your vision to life. Divi comes in handy for me as a designer in two significant ways.

    1. It allows me to build websites faster.
    2. Once I build it, my customers have the freedom to update their websites. There’s a learning curve, as with any new tool or system, but once you get the hang of it, the possibilities are endless.

Divi has many resources to help beginners and their own marketplace. There are also built-in templates to help get you started on your design. You could also use a child theme with a design in place and change it around to fit your needs.

Tip: A child theme in WordPress inherits the functionality and styling of another theme, called the parent theme. This allows users to make modifications without affecting the original theme’s code, ensuring that customizations stay intact when the parent theme is updated.

Elementor

Elementor is a popular drag-and-drop page builder plugin for WordPress that is designed to simplify the website creation process for users of all skill levels. This is particularly beneficial for entrepreneurs who need to create a professional-looking website quickly and affordably. Elementor integrates seamlessly with various WordPress themes and third-party plugins, enhancing its flexibility and functionality. The Pro version of Elementor includes even more powerful features, such as the Theme Builder, which allows users to design custom headers, footers, and other dynamic content areas across their site. Why Divi and Elementor are the Best Website Builders for WordPress

Divi and Elementor are WordPress’s most popular page builders, each offering unique features and benefits catering to different user needs. Divi, developed by Elegant Themes, is known for its powerful visual builder and all-in-one theme package, which includes both the Divi theme and the Divi Builder plugin. This makes it a comprehensive solution for users who want a unified theme and builder experience. Divi’s interface is highly intuitive, featuring a real-time visual editor and a vast library of pre-made layouts and design elements, allowing for extensive customization. Additionally, Divi comes with a lifetime plan option, which can be more cost-effective in the long run for users planning to maintain their sites for many years.

Elementor is a standalone plugin that can be used with virtually any WordPress theme, providing greater flexibility in terms of theme choice. Its drag-and-drop builder is praised for its speed and ease of use, making it accessible for beginners and advanced users alike. Elementor’s free version is robust, offering numerous widgets and design capabilities. In contrast, the Pro version unlocks even more advanced features such as the Theme Builder, WooCommerce Builder, and a wide range of professional templates. Entrepreneurs and small business owners might choose Elementor for its seamless integration with various themes and third-party plugins, allowing for a highly customized and scalable website solution.

Ultimately, the choice between Divi and Elementor depends on whether users prefer an all-in-one theme and builder package or a versatile plugin that can adapt to different themes and needs.

Key Features to Look for in a Website Builder

When choosing a website builder, consider the following key features to ensure it meets your business needs. Look for a platform with a user-friendly interface, preferably with drag-and-drop functionality, simplifying the design process even for non-technical users. Customization options are also crucial, as they allow you to tailor the look and feel of your site to match your brand identity. Additionally, ensure the builder offers responsive design capabilities so your site looks great on all devices, from desktops to smartphones.

Another essential feature is the availability of pre-designed templates and themes, which can save time and provide inspiration. Furthermore, integration capabilities with third-party tools and plugins are vital for extending your site’s functionality, whether you need e-commerce solutions, email marketing services, or booking systems. Lastly, consider the customer support and resources provided by the builder, such as tutorials, forums, and direct support channels, to help you troubleshoot issues and maximize the platform’s potential.

E-commerce Capabilities

E-commerce capabilities are critical for small business owners and entrepreneurs looking to sell products or services online when choosing a website builder. Platforms like Shopify and WooCommerce (which can be integrated with WordPress and Elementor) are designed for e-commerce, offering robust features such as secure payment gateways, inventory management, and customizable product pages. Shopify, for instance, is a dedicated e-commerce platform known for its ease of use and comprehensive suite of tools tailored to online stores.

Elementor and Divi also support e-commerce by integrating with WooCommerce, providing users with advanced customization options for product pages, shopping carts, and checkout processes. The Pro version of Elementor includes WooCommerce Builder, allowing you to design every part of your online store visually. When choosing a website builder, ensure it supports the specific e-commerce features you need, whether that’s digital product sales, subscription services, or complex product variations.

SEO and Performance Optimization

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and performance optimization ensure your website ranks well in search engine results. It provides a fast, seamless experience for visitors. Look for website builders that offer built-in SEO tools or easy integration with SEO plugins, allowing you to optimize meta tags, alt text, and content for better search engine visibility. Divi and Elementor offer SEO-friendly features and work well with popular SEO plugins like Yoast SEO.

Performance optimization is equally important, as slow-loading websites can deter visitors and negatively impact your search rankings. Choose a website builder that prioritizes speed and provides options for optimizing images, caching, and minimizing code bloat. Divi, for example, includes performance optimization settings, and Elementor’s clean code and speed optimizations help ensure your site loads quickly.

Pricing and Value for Money

When evaluating website builders, it’s essential to consider the pricing structure and the value for money they offer. Some builders, like Elementor, provide a free version with basic features, allowing you to test the platform before committing to a paid plan. The Pro versions of both Divi and Elementor come with more advanced features and capabilities, and it’s important to compare these to ensure they meet your needs.

Divi offers a unique lifetime plan, which can be a cost-effective solution for long-term use. In contrast, Elementor’s pricing is based on annual subscriptions, providing flexibility for those who prefer not to commit to a one-time payment. Consider your budget and the specific features you need to determine which plan offers the best value for your business.
